Table of Contents

Picture this. You run an Irish business, and you type your own main product or service into Google to see how you look. Three of the results staring back at you are not your website, not your competitors, and not a review site. They are Reddit threads, parked in positions 2, 3 and 5, ahead of brands that have spent years on their SEO. So the obvious question lands: where does your brand actually appear, and what is it costing you in clicks?

This page answers the question every stats roundup asks, the share of Reddit’s traffic that originates from Google Search, but then takes it somewhere those pages never go: what the number means for your visibility, and the paid search response smart Irish advertisers are already making. Here is the data, and here is what to do about it.

The Numbers: Reddit’s Google Search Traffic Share

Let us start with the headline figure. The share of Reddit’s traffic originating from Google Search sits at roughly 60 to 66 percent, depending on which measurement panel you trust. On reddit.com, visitors mainly come from Google organic at about 62% of traffic, followed by direct at around 30%, according to Semrush. Other panels land in the same band: organic search drives 60.35% of all Reddit traffic, with total monthly visits reaching 4.2 billion as of March 2026, according to SimilarWeb.

~62%of Reddit’s traffic arrives from organic search, the large majority of it GoogleSemrush / SimilarWeb estimated traffic data, 2026

Whatever the exact decimal, the direction is the same: most of the people who land on Reddit were sent there by a search engine, and that search engine is overwhelmingly Google. To put scale on it, over 200 million unique Reddit posts were clicked from Google search results in Q3 2025 alone. Reddit is now the sixth largest site in the world by organic traffic; reddit.com ranks 7th overall, placing it just below chatgpt.com across all web traffic measured by Ahrefs.

What the data tells Irish advertisers
  • Reddit lives on Google. Around 6 in 10 of its visits come from organic search, so every SERP it occupies is a borrowed slot Google chose to give it.
  • The forum is enormous now. Reddit reached 121 million daily active users in Q4 2025, up 19% year over year.
  • It eats commercial queries. Reddit ranks for product, “best”, review and “near me” style searches, the exact terms your customers use.
  • It is built for research. Reddit is searched 150 times per second on Google, and 83% of business decision-makers self-research before ever speaking to a sales rep.
  • The displacement is permanent, not seasonal. A contractual Google relationship (more below) means brands cannot wait for it to revert.
  • You can respond commercially. When organic real estate shrinks, a paid search strategy reclaims the top of the page on your own terms.

How Reddit’s traffic breaks down

Here is the estimated source split for Reddit’s own traffic. Treat these as third-party panel estimates, not Reddit’s internal figures, because traffic tools model from sampled data rather than server logs.

Traffic source Approx. share What it tells you
Organic search ~60 to 66% Google sends the clear majority of Reddit’s visitors
Direct ~30% App users and loyal community members typing reddit.com
Referral (incl. AI tools) ~5 to 8% AI platforms drive 35.67% of Reddit’s referral traffic, more than any other category
Social Low single digits A small slice from other social platforms

The point for your business is simple. The biggest single tap feeding the world’s seventh largest website is Google organic search, and a large chunk of that flows through commercial and research queries your own brand wants to rank for.

How Google’s Algorithm Updates Handed Reddit the SERP

Reddit did not buy its way to the top of your category. Google’s algorithm updates put it there. Two waves matter most.

The Helpful Content Update and the Reddit Surge

The turning point was Google’s 2023 Helpful Content Update (HCU) and the core updates that followed. The intent was to reward first-hand experience and demote thin, search-engine-first content. In practice, it surfaced user-generated content, and Reddit was the biggest beneficiary. Ahrefs estimated that Reddit went from receiving 57 million visits from Google US organic search in July 2023 to 427 million in April 2024. That is not a nudge, it is a landslide.

The effect was felt most acutely by commercial and review-style queries. In light of the traffic declines many sites suffered during the Helpful Content Update, Reddit appears to be earning many of the positions lost by sites whose visibility recently declined across many categories. Real examples bear this out: for the commercial keyword “groomsmen gifts”, Reddit newly appeared in position 2, beating niche eCommerce sites despite their extensive lists of products for sale. The Helpful Content system was later folded into Google’s core ranking, so this is now baked into how the SERP works rather than a bolt-on filter.

When Google decided that real human experience beats polished marketing copy, Reddit became the single biggest winner, and your category page became collateral.

The October 2025 Core Update Window: What Search Engine Roundtable Reported

Reddit’s relationship with Google has not been a straight line up. It has swung with each algorithm update, which is exactly why a recent drop in traffic after a Google update has become a recurring story for sites that depend on the SERP. The clearest recent example of that volatility: Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable noted significant ranking volatility around October 7 to 8, then again from October 15 to 17, and a final surge near October 28, which he jokingly dubbed the “Halloween Update”.

Worth being precise here, because the named event matters. Despite Barry’s attempt to label the October 28th volatility the “Halloween update”, these were not official updates confirmed by Google. For the full year, Google launched four official and confirmed algorithmic updates in 2025, three core updates and one spam update, far fewer than the seven of 2024. The takeaway for your brand: the SERP is now in a state of near-constant, often unannounced movement, so the Reddit traffic changes Google drives can hit your rankings without warning, and you cannot manage that risk by waiting for an “all clear” that never comes.

⚠️

Practitioner note: If your organic traffic dipped in October or December 2025, do not assume you did something wrong. Volatility was widespread and partly Reddit-driven. Diagnose with Search Console query data before you rip up a working content plan.

The Google-Reddit Deal: Why This Is Structural, Not Accidental

Here is the part the passive stats pages skip. Reddit’s presence in your results is not a quirk Google will quietly reverse. It is underwritten by a contract. In February 2024, Google signed a $60 million annual licensing agreement with Reddit for AI training data. That relationship has only deepened: AI data licensing deals now account for 10% of Reddit’s revenue, totalling $130 million annually from partnerships with Google and OpenAI.

Two things follow from that. First, Google is financially and strategically committed to Reddit’s content, both for its index and for AI Overviews. Google’s AI Overviews cite Reddit 5.8 million times across 2.6 million pages, more than any other AI platform. Second, Reddit itself has “changed shape” since its IPO, and its growth no longer hangs on Google’s whims. Reddit’s CEO disclosed that external search traffic from Google remained essentially flat in Q3 2025, with growth instead driven by organic product improvements and marketing. A maturing, self-sustaining Reddit plus a contractually committed Google equals a permanent fixture in your category’s results.

Key takeaway

The Reddit threads sitting above your brand are not a temporary algorithm wobble. They are propped up by a licensing relationship Google is paying tens of millions a year to maintain. Plan for permanence, not reversal.

What This Means for Your Brand’s Organic Visibility

Every Reddit thread that wins an organic slot is a slot your website did not get. On a page-one result with AI Overviews, ads, a discussions block and a “people also ask” panel, the number of true blue-link positions available to your brand has shrunk. When Reddit takes two or three of those, your organic ceiling drops with it.

This matters most for the commercial and research stage of the journey. 83% of business decision-makers self-research before ever speaking to a sales representative, and a large share of that research now runs through Reddit threads Google surfaces. If a prospect is reading what strangers say about your category on Reddit, and your brand is nowhere on that page, you have lost the framing of the decision before a conversation ever starts.

We see this in our own client accounts. One painting contractor we manage holds a strong position in its local auctions only because we defend the top of the page with paid placements. On that account, the managed campaign held the highest impression share of any advertiser in its local auctions, rising to 18.8% from 17.6% month over month. Without that paid presence, the organic results, increasingly seeded with forum threads, would set the entire impression of the brand.

The framework we use with Irish clients when Reddit starts dominating their category results.

You cannot stop Google surfacing Reddit, and you cannot out-Reddit Reddit. What you can do is own the part of the page Google sells rather than ranks. A well-built paid search strategy puts your brand back at the top, on your message, for the exact queries where forum threads now crowd out organic listings. This is where most competitor pages trail off; we build it out.

Brand Defence: Reclaiming SERP Real Estate with Google Ads

Brand defence campaigns place your ad above the organic results for your own brand terms and your core commercial queries. When a prospect searches and the page fills with Reddit discussions, your ad is the first thing they see, and it is the only result on that page you fully control. For an Irish business, that is the difference between framing your own offer and letting a five-year-old Reddit thread frame it for you.

The economics hold up. Across the local-services search campaigns we run, click-through rates have run from about 4.2% up to 7.6%, and accounts have produced anywhere from a handful to 50-plus tracked leads a month each. On our painting accounts, cost per tracked lead typically sits in the €45 to €140 range, and on one account we brought it from about €111 down into the low €60s as negative-keyword and targeting work compounded month over month. That is reclaimed visibility you can actually measure.

Audience Intelligence: Mining Reddit Threads for Targeting Signals

The same Reddit threads stealing your organic slots are also the most honest focus group you will ever read. The questions people ask, the objections they raise and the language they use are pure search intent, handed to you for free. Pull those phrases into your keyword lists, ad copy and landing pages, and you tighten the match between what searchers want and what your campaign says.

This is how adjacent demand gets found. On one painting account, once core terms were stable, we tested broader “general contractor / remodeling” keywords and within the first full month those terms drove around 40% of all conversions. Reading the room, on Reddit and in your own asset reports, tells you where the demand actually is before you commit budget. Actionable Takeaways for Irish Businesses

If Reddit is showing up for your category, treat it as a signal to act, not a reason to panic. Here is the sequence we follow.

Your Reddit-era visibility checklist

  • 1. Audit your top commercial SERPs: search your 10 most valuable terms and note where Reddit, AI Overviews and ads sit versus your organic listing.
  • 2. Stand up brand defence campaigns: protect your brand and core money terms with Google Ads so you own the top of the page regardless of what ranks below.
  • 3. Mine the threads: harvest real questions, objections and phrasing from the Reddit results to sharpen your ad copy, keywords and landing pages.
  • 4. Track calls, not just forms: for local and home services, phone calls match or beat form fills, so put a tracking number on the landing page and count them.
  • 5. Tighten with negatives weekly: ongoing negative keywords are budget protection, blocking competitor names, DIY queries and irrelevant clicks.
  • 6. Judge on a rolling window: performance swings month to month, so review trends over time rather than reacting to a single report.

FAQs

How much of Reddit’s traffic comes from Google?

Roughly 60 to 66 percent of Reddit’s traffic comes from organic search, the overwhelming majority of it Google. Semrush data shows visitors mainly arrive from Google organic at about 62% of traffic, followed by direct at around 30%. These are third-party panel estimates, so the exact figure shifts a little between tools, but the direction is consistent: Google is by far Reddit’s largest traffic source.

If most pages get little traffic from Google, what does Reddit have to do with it?

It is widely cited that the vast majority of web pages get little or no organic Google traffic, because a handful of pages capture most clicks per query. Reddit is now one of those click-capturing giants. Over 200 million unique Reddit posts were clicked from Google search results in Q3 2025 alone. When forum threads occupy the top organic slots for your category, they absorb clicks that would otherwise be spread across brand and publisher pages, which is exactly why your own pages can feel starved of traffic.

Is Reddit still growing in 2026?

Yes. Reddit reached 121 million daily active users in Q4 2025, up 19% year over year, with weekly active users of 471 million, up 24%. Notably, its CEO said external Google search traffic was essentially flat in Q3 2025, with growth driven by product improvements and marketing instead, which signals the platform is no longer dependent on Google to keep growing.

What is the most used search engine in 2026, and how does that affect Reddit’s reach?

Google remains the dominant search engine worldwide by a wide margin. Because Google sends roughly 6 in 10 of Reddit’s visits, Google’s ranking decisions effectively set Reddit’s reach. Google’s AI Overviews also cite Reddit 5.8 million times across 2.6 million pages, more than any other AI platform, so Reddit’s visibility now extends into AI answers as well as traditional blue links.

What should Irish businesses do when Reddit dominates their Google results?

Reclaim the part of the page you can control. Stand up brand defence campaigns with Google Ads so your message sits above the organic results, mine the Reddit threads for the language and objections your customers actually use, and track phone calls as well as form fills. Across our managed Irish local-services accounts, click-through rates run around 4.2 to 7.6 percent and cost per lead on painting accounts typically lands between €45 and €140 once campaigns are optimised. A focused paid search strategy turns a visibility problem into a measurable lead channel.
